Gibbet Hill/ Bancroft Castle, Groton, MA
Have you hiked to the top of Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA?
Along route 40, less than a half mile from the Gibbet Hill Grille, is a pull-off on the north side of the road. It's a quick, but steep, hike to the top, but the view is absolutely worth it.
At the top is the remains of the Bancroft "Castle". The ruins are incredible. Stone walls and charred wood still stand guard at the top of the hill. It's the perfect location for a walk, a picnic, photos, and breathtaking views of Groton. In the distance, you can see Wachusett Mountain and Mount Monadnock. This view west is especially spectacular in the fall.
This is one of my favorite locations for family photo sessions. There are so many incredible backdrops for the perfect portrait.
Do you know of any other castles and castle ruins in New England? I'm always looking for something new to check out!
