On our way out towards Colorado, we realized that the museum for Brown vs. Board of Education was in Topeka. We pulled off the highway and drove to the site.

The site was in the Monroe School, an old African American elementary school from the 1900s.

We went inside and proceeded to get the Junior Ranger packet.

We went through the museum one room at a time. There were multiple videos, each of them cooler than the last. There was one where you walked through a sort of tunnel and it had four screens playing video of riots and protests of desegregation. That was very overwhelming.

We learned about the 5 cases that made up Brown vs. Board of Education, the fight for desegregation, states that allowed and didn't allow segregation, and the differences in the segregated schools in the South and the Midwest.

We completed all the activities required of us, and we got our badge.

Now we are back on the road, in the middle of Kansas. Relatively boring, if you ask me. But Mom keeps obsessing over the cows, the baby cows, the barns, and even more cows.

  1. This is a great, unexpected side trip. I'm glad you made it through boring Kansas and are on to grander landscapes!
