Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana
We stayed at Indiana Dunes State Park for two nights. Located on the southern end of Lake Michigan, there is a state park and national lakeshore that preserves part of the coastline.
If you have never experienced the Great Lakes, you would be surprised to notice that just like the ocean, you can see where the lake meets the horizon. You'd also be surprised to learn that there are waves just like the ocean. You also might find it curious that the lakes are affected by tides as well.
As pretty as the Dunes are, when you look west or east, you can see the factories that have sprouted up along the coast, reminding you that the lake is not just for recreation, but also an important part of our economy. You can also see the impressive Chicago skyline in the distance.
A major complaint we had about the park is the limitation for lake use. Swimming is only allowed when a lifeguard is on duty, and the lifeguard is only on duty from 11 am to 6 pm. This eliminates a big part of beach time, and it requires you to be out in the sun at the most dangerous times for sun exposure. They need to rethink this policy.
The campground was clean enough, but it was packed. It was loud; definitely not a peaceful escape from city life.
